At what latitude is 1 minute of LONGITUDE:

(easy one) equal to 1 nautical mile
(hard one) equal to 1 STATUTE mile

    REPLY:
    No Bowditch necessary
1 nm = about 6076 feet, which equals 1 minute of longitude at equator
    1 stm = 5280 feet

Width of minute of longitude at any latitude is a function of the cosine
    of the latitude in question.

    Cos(0) (equator) = 1

Therefore; cos(0) is to 6076 feet as cosine (?) is to 5280 feet.

    Or cos (?) = 5280/6076 = .86899

    And ? = 29.65 degrees N/S
