I think they are correct, the over priced cards they sell are designed
only for use on the data plan. I use my phone's modem. Nothing to set up
except get a USB data cable and the software package (Verizon Mobile)
from them- about $50 ,also on eBay cheaper.

Subject: T&T verizon data question
Ronald -
Hi - I read your post on T&T - perhaps you can answer the question that
has me stumped -
What do you order from Verizon to get a 1xRTT card (Sierra 555 card)
activated on a voice plan so you can use the eve/weekend minutes?
I have 2 verizon cells on a family share plan. I wanted to add another
line to get a number to use the 555 card with. The Verizon sales people
I get say I can only use the 555 on a data plan and that those are only
sold as $80 unlimited or per MB.
Yet you appear to be using the 1xRtt service via a minute plan. How did
you get that set up with verizon?
Dave

When you hit the Quick Link Mobile icon on your desktop you are
offered
a small window with a pull down menu. On the menu you should have
choices such as Quick 2 Net, Broadband, Dial Up, Express Network 1xRTT.
Just choose the last and blow by the warning that you might be charged -
although you presumably will be unless it is off peak.
If you have questions about this you should call 611 and punch in the
option for mobile phone tech support. I find the people in the stores
often know nothing about the high speed stuff although they are getting
a lot better than they were 18 months ago. You don't have to pay the
$80/month for off-peak. Also note that such a contract is for data only.
Unlike Cingular they do not overlay voice over data. Other numbers you
can try if you want help are:
Verizon Wireless tech support: 866-890-2357 Mobile office: 866-658-8823
*2 Second level service: 800-308-3282

Subject: Verizon question
Hi Ron,
Regarding the 1XRTT Verizon 230 bit network being free during non peek
times, I was wondering if you could explain how to use it. I am set up
for it but, Verizon tells me I must sign up for the service and pay the
$80 monthly fee or pay by the mega-byte. How do I get around this on
weekends and after 9 PM? Thanks for explaining?
Sincerely,
Jim Laudermilch
