Thanks to all who provided the excellent information and insights on
this thread.
FWIW, I had lunch last Monday with a friend of mine who is retired
after 50 years in the refrigeration business. I related the problem I
had with the Danby freezer not running on my Heart 2500 inverter. He
said that the solution was quick and simple - "just wire a capacitor
in series with the start windings." Now, I would suspect "quick and
simple" is relative to one's expertise and experience. As for your
truly, who is electronically- and refrigerationally-challenged beyond
redemption, I don't have a clue as to what he was talking about.
In the meantime, I am going for Ron Lord's solution for the Avanti
mini freezer at http://tinyurl.com/5vlaf. This is exactly the type of
unit I have been searching for (I actually have space for it on my
boat!) and it is only about 20% of the cost of similar-sized units I
was able to track down on the web.
If the Avanti freezer takes up the cold war with the inverter where
the Danby freezer left off, then I will call on my refrigeration buddy
to demonstrate his quick and simple fix.
Somehow, this all seems too good to be true, especially on a boat.
Cheers and regards,
Bruce

does the ice cream melt?
