Per some requests I'll give Van Dorn's rationale for stern anchoring
which he claims to have used habitually over 40 years -mostly chartering
I understand so maybe not under any extreme conditions, although he
seems very well informed on storm anchoring which I think is one of the
    highlights of his book.

He bends a dock line to the bow anchor rode with a rolling hitch and
hauls it to a stern mooring cleat. He claims the boat lies comfortably
with better ventilation. If the wind gets up and the line chafes he has
lost a dock line not the rode. At this point of course the boat would
then swing to the bow anchor. Likewise the dock line could be let go at
any time should one need to swing to the wind. I think that the blunt
sterns of most trawlers would only lend themselves to this technique
under reasonably light weather conditions. The idea has some merit I
    believe.
