I was a duty crew member of Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) for
eight years and had some unusual experiences, one of which had to do with
heart transplants. We were called to a beach on Peter Island for a cardiac
arrest incident with a passenger from a day snorkel boat. One of the
owners of Peter Island Resort happened to be anchored off the beach in his
154' Perini Navi, along with his cardiologist and several EMT's, who met us
on shore to give assistance. We were quite unsuccessful, despite having a
defib as well as all kinds of drugs, compliments of the cardiologist, but
the interesting aspect was the make up of the owners party on the Perini
Navi, which consisted of the owner, a transplant recipient, and the donor,
believed by the cardiologist to be a first for that combination to be
hoisting cocktails together. It seems the donor had rejected his first
transplant, found a new heart and the rejected heart went into the owner of
the Pirini Navi.
