I don't know about these weldments some folks have pointed to. My experience
is with a forged steel claw, purchased with my sea-anchor, from Para-Tech.
This claw is impossible to release when there is *any* load on it and I found it
cumbersome to use on the snubber. Looks like the weldment might be slipped
more easily. For use with a sea-anchor, I'd want the real thing.
I now use a 2" Wichard snap-shackle on my snubber, same as is used on a jib
halyard. It's small enough to snap into the proper place at one end of a link,
won't rust, releases easily and won't fall off if it goes slack. Working load
same as 3/8" BBB; there are larger sizes. On my sailboat, I use a 3/8"
3-strand Nylon snubber for most days; 1/2" when it pipes up above 30 or so.
