The first time one wraps his rode around the prop will be the last time he
stern-anchors. This happened to me last February in Canouan. The fact that I had
a canoe-stern sailboat, with a full-keel and the prop in an aperture. I
cannot imagine doing it on a typical trawler with a broad transom and exposed props
and shafting. With sufficient scope and a swell or current, the rode can
easily foul your propulsion/steering gear. Put an anchor over the bow and tie the
stern to shore, if need be, and leave little slack. A heavy polypro line which
floats is safer (I like 5/8" "truck rope." Putting a second anchor on short
scope over the bow will stop you from swinging in an arc (but not from
weather-vaning.)
