Next message: Richard G. Cook: "Re: T&T: Dinghy/Tender"
I am just getting caught up on my T&T emails. I just read an email re yelling
and shouting and various replies...ie. "Your'e missing the good part of
cruising..." or words like that. When I first bought First Forty, from which
there was NO rear view, I bought a pair of two-way radios. Several years
later, they have not yet been used! I still feel they are a good idea, but
just haven't gotten around to trying them out. Yes, Gordon and I DO yell at
times, but his hearing is so bad, even that doesn't work at all times. When we
lock through, he is at the helm and can see if he needs to bring the boat in
or out, and I have a hand held VHF around my neck to communicate with the lock
tender. Gordon cannot use the VHF as he just can't hear well enough, and
cannot understand the Cajun lingo used by most lock tenders and barge
captains. I simply use hand signals from mid ship to let him know what's going
on. We have nearly no miscommunications in locks, and few if any when docking.
I take over both jobs (locking and docking) often enough to keep good at both,
but Gordon's knees are so bad that he's not very good at handling the lines.
Lord know on the Tennessee and Tenn-Tom, you get a LOT of experience at
locking! Don' t let them intimidate you!
