eWeek recently published a group of statistics showing that a PC, running
Microsoft XP, will remain virus free for only about 20 minutes when connected
to
the Internet without a condom (firewall and virus protection suite). Either
fully protect your navigation computer if you use it for other purposes or get
a
dedicated computer to use for navigation and nothing else. I personally have
adopted the latter strategy. Navigation does not impose great computational
loads on a computer and recent model older laptops, say 2 or 3 years old, are
perfectly adequate. These are available as refurbished models from Dell, HP,
Apple and IBM at greatly reduced prices. If you do not connect the computer to
the Internet and run only the navigation software, it should remain virus free
perpetually. Since most of opt for redundancy in critical systems, why not in
navigation. I also keep a set of paper charts and a hand held GPS in a locker
just in case.
