Bruce,
We have a small, I believe its a Danby (may be another brand but seems to me
all those "dorm size" reefers are about the same) that we run on an inverter
(600 watter) without a problem.
Are you trying to get it to start immediately after changing over? If so
that may be the problem. All refridge compressors are very hard to start
immediately after they have been running. Some of the more expensive models
have either a time delay that won't let them start for a while or maybe an
unload valve so that the compressor is not starting against pressure. When a
compressor starts against pressure it takes a terrific amount of kick to get
it going. 900-1000 watts would not be out of the question for a 100 watt
running compressor. It probably sucks 600-700 watts starting normally
against no pressure .
I have installed a small monitor light so that we can tell when the fridge
is running so that we don't try to make the change from inverter to
shorepower or vice versa while the compressor is running. If the light is on
we either wait until it goes off to make the change or turn it off at its
breaker, make the change and wait 4-5 minutes before turning it back on.
Bill
