There are two requirements as far as your documentation is concerned.
One is that you have the current documentation paper on board, or at
least a copy of it. Documentation has to be renewed every year,
although there is no charge for this unless you are late doing it.
"Confirmed" is probably a better word that "renewed," as nothing changes
unless you have a change of address to report. But you have to confirm
all the information on your documentation paper, at which point the
government sends you a new paper.

The other requirement is that your documentation number has to applied
to the boat in a manner that is not removable. The most common method
is to chisel or deeply engrave the number on an engine room stringer or
structural support that is not normally removable. Another method (this
is what's on our boat) is to have the number carved into a teak board or
whatever and then fiberglass the board to the inside of the hull
somewhere. In our case, it's fiberglassed to the inside of the transom
in the lazarrette. This was already in place when we bought the boat,
but since most if not all of the previous owners of our 1973 boat had
the boat documented, it's carried the same documentation number for ages
so we were able to use the same board.. Some people put the number on
the inside of the hull with vinyl letters and then fiberglass over it.

I have been told on occasion that both the fiberglassed-in board and
fiberglassed-over vinyl numbers do not meet the non-removable
requirement. The reason stated is that both of these could be easily
removed and the fiberglass quickly repaired so it was not evident
anything had been removed. However in the two USCG boardings we've had,
none of the guys inspecting the boat expressed any concern about our big
fiberglassed-in teak board in the lazarette. However, I intend (if I
ever remember to do it) to engrave the number on one of the metal engine
    bed stringers, too.
