    I think some of you folks are mixing a couple of things up here.

    The State registration numbers IE: OR-195-DF, cannot be shown on a
    federally documented boat. That is, this display in not permitted by
    Federal law as stated on the Federal documentation literature.

    The State boat registration and taxes must still be paid to the State as
    normal (in almost all States, if not all. I do not have the list in
    front of me).

    The State registration sticker (or decal), the one you get from the
    State when you pay your State boat registration fee described above,
    must still be affixed and displayed. Usually it is displayed on both
    sides at the stern quarter.

    So if your boat is Federally documented and you still have your State
    registration displayed on the bow (large, black, block letters and
    numbers) your vessel is operating illegally.

    In our neck of the woods, the local LE will write you up if they
    determine this to be true.
