In the past in Texas, if you were Federally documented, you didn't HAVE to
register with the state or display TX numbers. Now, in a great effort to
grab some taxes from the "rich" boaters, the state requires you to register
every boat with the state. You have to pay fees and sales taxes, and display
the little registration sticker, but you do NOT have to put the TX numbers
on the boat, even though you are assigned one if you are Federally
documented. I would imagine it's similar elsewhere.
