"You can't be state registered and Coast Guard documented at the same time."
Not so in Alabama. You "must" be state registered whether CG documented or
not. The only thing that is different is if the boat is CG documented, the
state does not require (but does not prohibit) that the registration numbers
be displayed BUT display of the yearly decals is required.
"Well, at least you can't display state registration numbers on a documented
boat."
Are you sure? We see it all the time. Is there a regulation that
specifically prohibits it?
What some folks here do is display their state numbers so that a zealous
water cop won't stop them just to find out its CG documented boat and is not
required to display state numbers. They'd rather have the state numbers
showing so they don't get stopped in the first place.
