Mike,
There is another Nokia model, the 6370 that I had, that will do the job,
and yes, it worked well for me with the serial cable. However, there are
other considerations that led me to upgrade to a Nokia 6340i, which by
coincidence, uses the same serial cable.
A boating friend that purchased the exact same 6370, and the entire
Cingular tech support organization could not get her phone to work with
her Dell. It had no serial port, and after trying several serial-to-USB
adaptors, she gave up.
I sold my phone and its cable. I don't want any serial devices on my
boat, period! They never work well unless they are attached and the
device is on when you boot up. In case of a hiccup, you have to do it all
over again.
For less than the cost of a dedicated serial cable, you can buy a USB
infa red IR port. You can plug anything into a USB port while the
computer is on, and it works. My 6340i, which stands for IR, works at the
same speed and is not dependent on getting the serial cable to work. It
was so easy to go IR - worked the first time I set it up. Try that with a
serial cable.
I cannot report whether you will get enough speed with the IR and GSM so
that you will be happy with Internet access. There are drawbacks: it is
still slow, and it still will not work in analog roam mode. However, most
of these other services will not work unless you are in a digital area,
and of course, then the signal is weaker so you have to be closer.
I'm hoping for more developments in the range and accessability of WiFi,
as that seems to be feasible for those cruising inland, the ICW, and even
parts of the Bahamas. Until then, I would spend no further dollars on
obsolete or dying technology.
