I'd like to add to Bob's comments re life raft inspections for keeping you
in that "comfort zone".
We just sent 3 10-man canister packed liferafts to the repack center. 2 were
10 year old Plastimo Ocean rafts that had been inspect twice. Once in 1997
once in 2001. Both of them were condemned as the fabric was rotten..ie they
didn't hold air...not good in a lift raft.
The other was a Zodiac 1994 also repacked twice in the last 10 years. This
also would not hold air due to delaminated seams..the glue had failed.
Each of these rafts were SOLAS packs and all looked very good from the
outside. Obviously giving a very false sense of security :-(
This is not atypical of canister packed rafts that are located on deck
exposed to the tropical sun and salt air from our experience. I think this
makes a good case for some type of enclosure/cover but coming up with one
that won't impede instant deployment requires some thought. Storing it below
defeats the purpose and moving a 100 odd lb canister often will eventually
damage the case. Catch 22.
YMMV
