T&T: How to remove heavy "patina" on brass

On Thursday I started to refinish the forward saloon window on Sanderling, and
removed some old brass hardware which helps lock the window in the closed
position. The matching pieces on the window frame have yet to be removed. All
of it is covered with a heavy "patina" which will be tough to remove with
normal metal cleaners and elbow grease.

I'm thinking there must be some solution the brass can be put in which will
    eat away the green stuff.

    Any suggestions?
