OK - This weekend I set about the task or re-bedding some of my deck
hardware on the aft sundeck. The deck is fiberglass that is cored with
plywood. These are primarily stanchions that hold the handrail and sundeck
surround. Thanks to the manufacturer's shortsightedness, thru-bolting was
not an option. When I started to remove the existing hardware, I noticed
that 1/2 of it was machine screws and 1/2 was wood screws. I believe the
machine screws were original. I have over-drilled the original holes and
re-filled them with thickened west system epoxy and I will drill pilot holes
and re-set the hardware with 3m 4200. My question is, do I use the machine
screws or the wood screws. The machine screws seem to have more threads per
inch. The wood screws seem to have deeper threads. I believe the machine
screws need to be "tapped" as well in order to install them. Any thoughts?
