To answer a couple of WiFi questions...

Yes, if you want to use it effectively on your boat. The small antennas on
the router will not give you the range that a larger antenna will give you.
I get a mile or two out of my high-gain antenna.
By the way...in Scituate, MA right now - had about 5 different connections
to choose from. Last May there were none.

This won't do what you want unless you only want WiFi access at a fixed
location. If you're on your boat and you're moving, using a range extender
is an exercise in frustration. I bought one last March because I thought it
would make life easier. It didn't.
A range extender doesn't amplify ALL WiFi signals that it receives. It only
re-broadcasts the selected one router that you configure it for. When you
pull into a new harbor, you'll have to figure out which site you want, then
configure the extender, then attempt to use the extender, re-cabling the
antenna. It is much easier to just have a powerful antenna in the first
place.
