    Generally, these devices will not just automatically repeat any signals they
    receive. They usually have to be programmed with the MAC address of the
    access point you are trying to connect to.

    At least, that has been my experience with all the repeaters we have used to
    extend our customers wireless networks.

    I have been considering adding a Linksys WRE54G "Range Extender" to an
    electronics box on the bridge. These cost about $90. As I understand it
    this device receives any available signals and acts as a wireless repeater.
    You would normally use it between two access points if they were too far
    apart to receive each others signal. It only connects to 115 volts and
    there is no wired connection to a computer or network.

    The advantage of this would be that I would have an outside antenna without
    the hassle or line loss of running a cable from the top of the flybridge to
    the cabin. I would receive this signal using a Wireless card in my notebook.

    Is there anyone out there with enough knowledge about WiFi to tell me if
    this will work or at least is worth trying.
