The Coast Guard was in communications with them via VHF. As long as a
commercial operator will go to their assistance the Coast Guard stays out
of it. If the vessel in danger refuses to hire a commercial operator,
sometimes the Coast Guard will render assistance. But the Coast Guard is
not a parts runner. In this case, the boat was disabled, but otherwise ok,
e.g., there were no souls in immanent danger, so the Coast Guard would just
monitor the situation.
The above was the situation as I understand it, and the Coast Guard's
policy - as I understand it.
Take care and be safe.
