    It sounds as if your electrical engineer friend wants you to use the negitive
    side of the electrical system as the hull of the boat, which I presume is
    metal (steel, alumium, or monel).

    This is not a good idea. It can cause excessive electrolysis, plus a number
    of other problems in the grounding and protection systems. There are too many
    problems to even list in a short post.

    Even in a steel boat, the negitive part of the system should be in cables,
    with proper single point attatchment and proper isolation from the ground and
    bonding systems.
