Just completed changing the primary and secondary fuel filters on my Detroit 453's and ran up the engines to check for leaks, etc. I have the dual racor system with vacuum guages on both engines. I immediately noticed that I am pulling 15 inches of vacuum on the port engine at idle and it runs up to about 20 inches at 1000 rpm. I do get a slight reduction in the vacuum when I select both filters. I also get a vacuum break after I have shut down the engine and move the racor selector lever to both (the needle jumps to about 10 inches for a second or two before returning to zero and you can hear a little hiss of vacuum in the line). Changing source tank did not effect the readings.
This may sound stupid, but I did not run the engine and observe the vacuum guage prior to changing the filters, so I have no way of knowing if this situation existed prior to the change of elements.
My stbd engine system is normal with almost no detectible vacuum indication of the guage when running.
I suspect a blockage in the fuel line from the tank selector panel to the racors? To confirm this I was considering removing the fuel line from the starboard engine and running it to the port engine, does this seem a logical way to determine the problem?
