This is a great list. I have been a participant for only three or four
years, but in that time I have received some wonderful advice and invaluable
information, but most of all I have connected with some truly kindred
spirits.
I have always had a love affair with boats. I built my first, an 8ft. scow
from Popular Mechanics "23 boats you can build" when I was 10 years old. I
still have the book 51 years later (and a few more besides!!).
Since then I have built or converted or bought several others, on each
occasion financing the next one from the one I had just completed.
So I guess you could say that, like so many of us, I have spent most of my
life investing in boats and that investment has paid enormous dividends in
pleasure, adventure, experience and friendship.
What's amazing though, is that because I've been lucky enough to break even
on resale in most cases (not including man hours, fuel and general
maintenance of course) I can think of no other endeavor which could have
rewarded me with so very much for so few dollars?
IMHO there are two kinds of people who have boats: boat owners and what I
call boat hobbyists. From my experience the majority of listees fall into
the latter category, which is what makes T&T great.
I agree with all those who suggest that owning a boat is an investment in
fun and fulfillment and I'm sure that there are many who seldom leave the
dock and have much of both.
But one thing of which I'm really certain is that for me boat ownership is
an investment in my own well being. And that's worth a heck of a lot.
Cheers
