We bought our first boat 6 years ago in 1998, a GB32 woodie. My wife Laura
was the motivating force behind getting the boat and of course I was happy
to go along.
We had looked at boats in the early 80's and realized that we could not
afford one then, regardless of the price. This time, after we decided that
we could afford to invest quite a lot of money in a boat, we started getting
cold feet and trying to justify it as some sort of investment. We talked to
my Mother (then 88) and my older brother and their sentiment was that it is
better to do it while you can enjoy it rather than wait until you are "old
enough" or retired, because by that time something may have happened that
would prevent getting the boat or using it. I should add that when I was
growing up we had small outboard boats and my Mother always loved sitting on
the bow and getting splashed, so I guess she already knew the enjoyment of
boating.
It is certainly not a financial investment, but it is an investment in our
enjoyment of life and we don't regret for a moment that we made the decision
to buy our boat. As others have mentioned, the memories are priceless and I
don't think we have taken a trip where we haven't mentioned to each other
how much my Mom would have enjoyed being with us.
