My shower sump pump has a check valve in the line. It sometimes sticks from
all the soap scum that collects in it. What I have done to correct the
problem is pour a gallon or so of hot water directly into the sump followed
by several more gallons of clean water. Seems to work for me.

I had the same problem with the shower sump on my schooner. It was an air
lock, caused by running dry for a moment. Turn it off, the airlock clears
itself, turn it back on it worked. Maybe a check valve in the pump outlet
would work, I just turned mine on and off.
