Andy from Creative Marine called me this AM with some help. I prefer e-mail
becasue I could then simply relay the info to the list. Instead I have to
remember and interpret what Andy said. As I'm actually doing other things
some info may not be translated as he ment it to be. So YMMV.
First, I want to note how good it is to have someone to call for help.
Andy noted several things which could have by themselves or together caused
the Super Max to pull loose and not re-set.
1. Scope . . .
Andy suggests that especially in shallow water (under 10 feet), that the
Max be set with 5 or 6:1 scope (with chain). Not the 4:1 I was attempting.
Also, when the anchor digs in it can go several (3-4) feet deep into the
mud, he suggested I add that to my scope calculations. Finally he suggested
that Skooch's bow is farther than 6 feet off the water (which is most
likely correct, I will measure it soon).
The new math 6ft water + 8ft bow + 3ft mud = 17ft with 50 feet of chain
3:1 scope. Andy says it should have been 85 minimum. Enough said for scope.
2. Pivoting Super Max Anchor
Andy politely suggested I adjust the anchor for soft mud as per the
instructions. Instructions clearly say to straighten the shaft for soft
mud. Enough said here as well.
3. Setting the Max
Andy suggests pulling down on the anchor hard when setting it
4. Re-setting
T&T listee Ron Rogers was concerned that mud stuck in the anchor kept it
from re-setting. I asked Andy about this and he said that it can do that,
usually in stiffer mud than I described. Also he went on to relate a few
stories where boaters had caught enough debris on the blades to stop the
anchor from re-setting. He felt the above three suggestions and the mud all
contributed to the anchor not re-setting.
Other than that it seems I anchored perfectly. :) For all those folks
anchored down wind from Skooch - I will never have less than 6:1 scope from
now on.
