What I've been doing lately is by using the windlass leisurely ease up the
rode until it is vertical. Snub it off on the Samson post and then wait a
few minutes while busying myself with something else, but watching for
drifting. (there is always something to do on the bow. Straightening
fenders, washing it down, etc.)
Unless the water is really calm, after a few minutes the anchor has worked
itself out and comes right on up without much effort from the windlass.
Please remember that we are in mud almost all the time and that this
procedure assumes no hurry.
If we are in a hurry for some reason, we use Bob's method of powering it out
with the boat.
