Although I'm a newbie on this list, I have previously participated in similar
(the old cruising list; live-aboard, worldcruising, etc) and have
unsubscribed from at least one where there was no, or insufficient, moderation. This was
because of either extended OT discussions which belonged on alt.politics or
the like, or (in the case of the old cruising list), the departure of the best,
most experienced posters because some took them to task about everything they
said. In those early listserver days of the mid 90s, I learned a lot from
those old-timers, and it was a big loss when they departed. I sincerely hope it
doesn't happen here; but it sounds like many of the experienced folks are
speaking up in favor of keeping "the rules."
As most of my boating experience has been on Lake Champlain and in the
Eastern Caribbean, with just one passage there and only one East Coast ICW
round-trip, I joined this list to learn something of trawlering and the places you
all cruise, and to share what I may have learned in my 40 years in the
commercial marine industry. So, this s my plug for moderation (no pun).
Good sailing,
John
