Golly folks,
I must admit that I didn't anticipate the level of hard feelings this
would generate!
First off, let me assure you all that the Trawlers & Trawlering List
rules have not changed in any way. This issue is the result of what
you might call an experiment in list management. We've learned some
things and, the last I checked, the sun continues to rise each
morning.
I've been the T&T (TWL) listmaster for just under two years now.
Before that I spent four or five years on the Help Team working on
various posting issues. During my time as listmaster I've shut down
one or (possibly) two threads because they had gotten completely off
topic. Further, I've privately asked a few members to take a topic
private or to get back to the trawler related aspects of a discussion.
While I sometimes get a supportive message as a result of such an
action, it is far more common to get chewed out. For example, I'm
still getting gentle public zingers and some really quite nasty poison
pen stuff from shutting down an out of hand gun thread NINE MONTHS
ago.
As you might suspect, that sort of thing gets tiresome. It's also an
indication that I might be getting overzealous. So, when the 'Marine
Professionals' thread went off the tracks, I decided to leave it alone
for a while to see if it would "cure" itself - It didn't, but nobody
seemed to be complaining too much either.
Since everyone seemed to accept a discussion of the merits of souped
up Chevy's vs. souped up Honda's, I thought I'd take a look at some
other boundaries. Here's what I've learned so far:
1. Hot rods are OK.
2. Politics might not be OK.
3. Liberal politics are definitely not OK even if they are on topic
and well documented.
My post dealt with what I believe to be the problem underlying the
difficulty in finding competent technicians to do work on a boat. I
was careful to tie the points I made to the original topic of the
thread and I provided information for anyone wishing to back check my
facts.
Even though (believe it or not) a few people actually agreed with the
post, the overall response to the way thread was handled was probably
between 90 & 95% negative and most if not all of that response came in
after my political post. Of the negative stuff, the replies fall into
just a few categories:
1. Let's get off this and get back to trawlers. (I maintain that my
post was scrupulously on-topic)
2. What happened to List Management? (see above)
3. The old rules were better. (see above)
4. Alex has his head up his... (This one was from a former member who
didn't much like me anyway)
5. Alex should be removed as listmaster. [Georgs and I are considering
this one. If you'd like to volunteer please contact one of us
PRIVATELY (let's not clog up the list any more than we already have)]
Alex
