I manage two private list servers and our guidelines are roughly as
follows.
No personal attacks, cheap shots, deliberately inflammatory or
provocative statements. (Determined by the list moderator)
No political or other non-list related posts
Stay on the subject or change the subject (thread drift)
If obvious violations I immediately disable the account and send a
"canned" notice to the problem user explaining in a very supportive and
encouraging way why their post was inappropriate and asking them to
conform to the rules. If I receive a positive response, I re-enable the
account. If not, I disable the account. They can appeal if they
reconsider. I never use the "my way or the highway" argument.
In the case of T&T, I have advocated many years for more compassionate
control... IE: encouraging folks to stay within the rules not slamming
them for failing to do so.
In the case of T&T I have always lobbied for a slight relaxation on the
"No Commercial" posts rule. It is easy to determine whether the post is
an overt commercial solicitation or an industry professional offering
their insight. A post that ends with something like, "I have these on
sale for $35.00" and with the contact information should not be
considered a violation of the rules IMO.
That's just my opinion. But given the choice between no rules and the
original TW rules, I'll take the original restrictions.
I often point to this list as 'The way to do it right" and over many
years the formula here has proven itself. My concerns have always been
that we lose industry professionals or others with deeper knowledge
through list rule conflicts.
