    Ken,

I have the same situation with the chain on my boat; some surface rust
    and discoloration, but no pitting.

If, indeed, your chain is 3/8", you have a long way to go before it's
strength is reduced to the point where your anchoring will be
compromised. It is just amazing how much strength a link that is severely
pitted still retains, or how difficult it is to take a hacksaw and cut it
off. Some experience I have had with 3/8" mooring swivels and their bolts
gave me the confidance to let them get nearly half corroded before
replacing. You did not state what type of chain you have (look for
markings on the link), but if it is G-4 Hi-Test, you definitely need not
    be concerned.

While I agree with Bob Austin's advice that the chain can be
regalvanized, the cost of having this done to my chain was not worth the
hassle or expense, and I would have opted for replacing with new chain at
a total cost of under $350.

Another short term option will buy you some time to decide what you might
want to do. For now, suggest you wash the chain thoroughly with fresh
water and dry. Then treat the rusted spots with Ospho. After all of the
rust has turned to a white discoloration, spray the spots with zinc
chromate or galvanizing primer. That should retard the rusting process.
There is practically no risk of breaking a chain link from surface rust
(you mention minimal pitting, BUT the rust on your nylon line will reduce
its strength a great deal, which is why you want to retard the oxidation
    process.
