I don't recall anyone having concerns about the boat becoming unstable; just
concern about a new-found list that they might cause.

Arild,
The 8D batteries I'm familiar with come in a 220 AmpHrs and 165 pounds each.
That comes down to nine 8D batteries to get to 1980 Amp Hrs, for a total
weight (without boxes, cable and connectors) of 1,485 pounds (1,650 pounds
if you want to get over 2000 AmpHrs). That is more like eight 180 pound
adult males.
That is indeed a significant amount of additional weight to be added that
high (in addition to the normal passenger and gear load), and will
definitely raise the CG of the vessel a significant degree.
If I was going to add that type of permanently installed weight in a vessel
of that size, I would want a naval architect to review the numbers and make
sure the boat's stability is not being compromised.
