I'm not sure you're right about this Bob.
My TMD40A has no black smoke at all until WOT, then just a little.
Seems to me there's something wrong and if it were me, I'd be enlisting
the aid of an EXPERIENCED Volvo mechanic.

Your tmd31 will not be happy at 2500 rpm, and it will smoke. One inch
less
pitch should increase you rpm by about 500 on a 20 inch prop, that's
from my
own experience, not from the book. Probably you need more rpm's to get
the
boost up. Thats one of the downsides of turbo motors, they need to get
over
the hump before they can be at top efficiency.
