Just stahing on the air conditioning side of the issues there are a lot of
things which can be done to make the air conditioners more effecient. We have
spent a lot of time in the tropics with no Air conditioners. Generally if
there is a breeze life is comfortable. Today it was 90+ outside on the water,
but as long as we were moving in the boat, or in an area where there was a
breeze it was very comfortable in the SHADE.

Many times even in the hottest areas, it cools down at night. We rarely run
the AC after 11 PM--we open the hatches, turn on the 12 volt fans and are
    comfortable.

Keith gave a number of great clues to making the A C more effecient. I would
add awnings. I find that light tan is the best color. No glare and good heat
absorption. Awning whihc cover all of the windows from the sun. Awnings over
the decks. These will make worlds of differences in the amount of AC
required. If you want to still see out of the windows or overhead--at least
use some screen material such as found at home depot for plants.
