Avast!
The Trawlers & Trawlering family of mailing lists have been,
throughout their history, Plain Text only forums. Any message
submitted with HTML, Rich Text, or other enhanced formatting runs the
risk of being garbled in the posting process. It has always been this
way, members are warned of this requirement upon joining, and we don't
plan to change things (because it's an effective de-facto anti-virus
filter).
When we describe the list as a Plain Text forum what we really mean is
that the Mailman software used to run the list only sends out Plain
Text. Over the last several versions of Mailman the software has
become fairly adept at stripping the formatting code that's associated
with HTML etc. In many cases this is done transparently and there is
no hint that anything has been changed; other times, the observant
reader will see a note at the bottom of a post that indicates the
removal of some sort of graphic content; finally, there are cases like
the one above where the formatting code is such that the current
version of Mailman doesn't 'know' how to deal with it.
Is this a failing in Mailman or in this family of mailing lists? Nope;
As mentioned above, the Plain Text policy is clearly spelled out in
the "Welcome to Trawlers & Trawlering" message that is sent to all new
members. I can't force people to read that message or to comply with
everything in it. OTOH: If not following those procedures causes a
message to not be posted properly....... Well, I'm not going to lose
much sleep.
Soporifically yours,
Alex
