I've only seen one used on sailboats where we cruised -- we had just one.
I suppose it would be a function of the size of the boat, distance from
the centerline and the roll characteristics of your trawler. Our trawler,
a former salmon troller with a round bottom, really rolls, as, I suspect,
a Willard might. I would certainly just start with one.
In severe conditions the load can get pretty high. We broke the wire
bridle on our spinnaker pole while anchored during a gale (off Baja).
