I to am hesitant to embrace the newer electronically controlled diesel
engines being sold today. However, i have to disagree with Arild that the
newer vehicles are not as durable or longlasting as the older
precomputerized ones. 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranties are common on
new cars and most of them do that with ease. In 1982, 100k on a chevy half
ton truck was considered extremely high milage, and it very seldom reached
that number without having some major work done on it. Most had the old 305
weezer motor and a transmission thas was pure junk, the 700r4. The new chevy
half ton is not even comparable, it's tougher, more powerfull, smoother, and
longer lasting- and gets way better gas milage. My wife drives a car that
can run the quarter mile in under 12 seconds and gets 29 mpg. on the road.
The biggest problem I see is that I can't fix them if they quit, but, i
could fix the older ones- and needed to a lot of times. In the automotive
industry electronics have greatley improved vehicles and reliability, and
most people can't fix it if it breaks in any case. Same with boats, if you
can't fix it, it doesn't matter what makes it run, may as well go for the
newer technology and at least get those benifites.
