I also decided to buy my 4/0 cable from bestboatwire.com--and am way pleased
with the price differential. Also got my Trojan 6V mondo deep-cycle
batteries from a local forklift support vendor--at a substantial savings
over marine outlets. They also can crimp on terminals, etc.

    Cheers-

    Subject: T&T: Welding cable

    Gil,
One of my winter projects was to replace the 20 year old welding cables
used on my starboard engine with 2/0 battery cable. The insulation had
started to separate from the the wire on the ends and there was chafing on
one area. I replaced the cable from the starter to the battery switch and
back to the batteries and the cables connecting the two 8D's starter
batteries. One of the side effects of the project is that the starter seems
to have twice the juice as before. I never had a problem starting the
engine but now the engine turns over much faster and starts quicker.
Obliviously the old welding cable was not conducting as much juice as the
    2/0 cable.

I was also shocked by the high price of Ancor cable at the local WM so I
looked around the web and bought the cable thru bestboatwire.com. The wire
is Pacer Marine and it's spec's are identical to Ancor but it's price is
much less, 3.42/ft at bestboatwire vs. 7.49/ft for 2/0 at WM for Ancor
brand. It's amazing how many feet of cable are required to go from the
starter, around the engine, up to the on/off switch and back to the
batteries. Add in the cable lugs and shrink tubing and you've spent a lot
of $ but it's a project worth doing. Next winter I'll replace the cables to
    the port engine.

Usual disclaimers, just a happy customer.

While at my local boating supply store (a national chain) I was picking up
some 2/0 marine cable; it sure is expensive. An employee of the store said
    I
should go to the local welding supply store where the same gage welding
    cable
sells for 25% of marine cable. Should I take his advise? If not, why not?
