Let me underline everything that previous listees has said about ear
    protection.
I started in aviation before it was a common thing to wear muffs! I was there
when the first Caravelle came out fitted with RR Tynes which was a radial
compressor type turbojet, and extremely noisy. So noisy that you actually run
    away because of pain.
I have now deminished hearing in certain ranges of up to 90%! And this is what
I will add to Bob Austin and others: Do not use the "in ear plugs", they
reduce the noise almost as much as muffs, but they do not stop the pressure
from the noise, which, acording to OSHA, is just as dangerous. Buy a good set
of ear muffs or hearing protectors, with a minimum of 24 Db noise reduction.
