We've been out cruising for 6 weeks and have gone 1,300 statute miles from
Tampa Bay, FL to Mile 37 on the Tennessee River. We cruised the Panhandle of
Florida, then from Mobile, AL made our way up the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
By early July the rains and floods had subsided, leaving little debris and
about 2 MPH currents to contend with as we headed north. The highlights at this
point have been a beautiful weekend anchorage at Bay Springs Lake, just north
of the last lock on the Tenn-Tom and the whole, fabulous Land Between the
Lakes in Kentucky. Every bay holds a peaceful, isolated anchorage to enjoy,
except on weekends.
At this point, the plans cast in Jell-O are to head up the Tennessee River to
Huntsville, AL, then Chattanooga, TN, and then to spend the rest of August -
October enjoying the four exquisite rivers between Chattanooga and Knoxville:
the Little Tennessee, Tellico, Clinch and Emory Rivers.
To date we've run 183 engine hours, averaging 7.1 MPH (including locks, no
wake zones, warm up and cool down time) with fuel consumption at 1.55 GPH.
Generator time has been 50 hours at an assumed 0.6 GPH, mainly for air
conditioning purposes. We've fueled in Destin, FL for $1.40/gal. and at Kenlake Marina
in Aurora, KY at $1.56/gal.
In our 41 nights out, we've anchored 31 nights, enjoyed 2 nights of free
dockage, and paid for marina slips 8 nights at an average rate of about $.75 per
foot.
