I considering installing four Weaver "swivel mount" metal dinghy chocks (model C1207), which are six-inch high stanchions, using 4 inch by 7 inch pads, to store our 11-foot RIB (Achilles) dinghy with outboard, when we are underway. A photo of the system, available from a number of sources, is at http://store.weaverindustries.com/merchant.cfm?step=4&pid=60.
I will be using a boom and winch to lift the dinghy onto the chocks, which would be installed on the top of the boat's salon. We take the dinghy up and down quite a bit, a minimum of twice daily when underway, sometimes three times (dog-walking, what can I say?). I have tried towing the dinghy for a couple of thousand miles, but it puts too much wear on the undersides. What I am curious about is others' experience with this chock system or similar systems. Any thoughts? Thanks for any information. Would especially be interested in opinions on whether a swivel is really necessary, once the chocks have been correctly positioned. Non-swivel chocks are less expensive.
