    While the ABYC recommendations are indeed a voluntary set of standards (i.e.,
    there is no law saying you have to follow them), the insurance industry has
    volunteered themselves to follow the recommendations to lower their risks.

    As such, ABYC says to do it, the surveyor says it's needed, and the insurance
    carrier tells you to fix it in 30 days or your coverage is void! Using solid
    house wire is just a plain bad practice on a boat, and the insurance carriers
    look to ensure it is not used.

    For my money, the only wire I will use on a boat is stranded pre-tinned copper
    wire - No solid house wire, and no untinned stranded copper wire. There is a
    reason that you will never find any solid house wire in any marine store!
