If your desire is to protect the whole circuit, "somewhere in the circuit"
will not work. It has to be the first outlet in the circuit as the GFI
outlet only protects itself and those downstream from it. Any outlet between
the GFI and the incoming AC will not be protected.
It is also my understanding, I'm not a licensed electrician, that many new
land-based electrical codes call for the use of the spring clips ONLY when
installing 120v AC outlets and switches. We may see the screw connections go
away.
