    Nobody, that I have seen, has mentioned that one must also deduct
    (sometimes mentally) the amount of fuel under the bottom end of the fuel
    pickup tube in each tank. That is a variable amount, depending upon, not
    only the distance from the tube to the bottom of the tank, but also the
    location fore/aft and side-to-side, angle of pitch and heel encountered and
    the general sea state. When venturing into rough waters and there is a
    possibility of running low on fuel and thus sucking air into the fuel
    lines, use a day tank to concentrate all your available fuel. Day tanks can
    usually be fed from the bottom of the main tanks, and therefore can remove
    the fuel that the normal pickup tube cannot. This is a good method to
    extract all of the fuel in a tank, provided there is a filtering system to
    remove gunk before the fuel gets put into the day tank. Uh .... There is a
    switchable fuel-polishing system on the boat, isn't there? :)
