Jim, I too would think that 350HP in a Monk 36 is too much. Can it be done, I
would guess sure. Mainship installs a 385 Cat or even twins in their Mainship
400. What you'd probably achieve is a great way of keeping your fuel tanks
cleaned out through the rapid use of fuel. The Monk 36 and any other
semi-displacement hull becomes increasing inefficient as you exceed hull
speed. My Monk 36 is running between 7 and 8 knots at 1800 rpm, at WOT (2600
rpm) the speed only increases to about 10 knots. Although I don't have the
fuel consumption charts, it probably doubles between 1800 and 2600 rpm. Of
course, you couldn't (shouldn't) be running above 2100-2200 rpm for prolonged
periods of time.
There is one Monk 36 powered by a 270HP Cummins rather than the now standard
220HP Cummins (soon to be 230HP with the change to the electronically
controlled engine). I believe he achieves 10 knots near 2100 rpm. His prop
probably has a greater pitch than mine, which the additional HP will allow.
He also has installed trim tabs, which just doesn't seem appropriate for a
Trawler; although they are commonly found on the new class of Fast Trawlers.
Jim, it really comes down to your goal; speed or efficiency.
Gil
