There certainly is a great deal of variability in the quality of Taiwan built
boats--both sail and power. The Marine Trader boats were built by a number of
yards--and often molds were switched or copied from one yard to another.
All cable steering has been in use in small boats for many years. The cable
wraps around a drum--the chain inserted in the way of the helm is certianly
better. However if the cable breaks--and when used in runabouts they did
break regularly--an emergency repair is to cut the cable, use bull dog clamps
and insert another length of cable in a non critcal place.
All boats should have an emergency tiller, peroid. These are not all utalized
from above deck--and I have seen some where the tiller actually faced aft. In
a single screw boat it is much easier for two people to dock a vessel using an
emergency tiller--since it is very rare that engine controls are located near
the tiller.
I have had to use emergency tillers several times--and a well designed unit
works reasonably well.
