Alright Marin, you got me. I went back and read your whole post. The
MFDs(Multi Function Displays) on aircraft is where this radar and course info would
be. The reason why it works so well in airplanes is due to the overly
simplistic nature of the "chart". It is usually the simple connection of waypoints
with lines that allow you to see your course in relation to the location of
echoes(weather or ground paint). Now, to be able to do this onto your boat radar
would be useful, but again, you are not getting the full effect/info of your
charts if you are just overlaying a courseline on your radar. So while your
arguement has many valid points, it is not a good parallel between the boat and
airplane radar. On the MFD you are only getting a courseline(not a chart
full of information). I fly some of the most up to date technology in this
regard. And While the PFD/MFD is extremely useful and has almost endless uses(GPS
based EGPWS is one of my favorites), I would still have to get a chart out If
I wanted to know the minimum enroute altitude of the airway I am flying on.
The engineers of that technology realize that the operator(pilot) cannot
disseminate those different kinds of information and they are best left out.
Trawler on,
John
PS.....Boeings are engineered by geniuses to be flown by idiots. Airbuses
are engineered by idiots to be flown by geniuses(hopefully no offense to any
Airbus engineers on here....or boeing pilots for that matter).....just a happy
idiot here!!!!!
