Marin,
As much as I regret, I sometimes don't have the time to read your whole
posts. SO this reply is based on my partial scanning abilities.
With that said, I do not have any ability to overlay radar onto a vector
chart. I do spend a lot of time on a friend's boat(who happens to be a listee)
who does have the ability. I can tell you, the overlay feature, while useful in
some situations, is not the preferred choice for a "primary" display. In
other aords, that would not be the screen that I would choose as the default/95%
of the time display. It is the split screen. The reason being is that there
is just too much clutter/different types of data. And if we wanna get deeper
into how your mind disseminates information, the chart is "real" and concrete
and there is hard data to be processed. The radar leaves that up to the
observer. It all looks the same(echoes/targets) but some of it "exists"(is
actually real) and some of it is just clutter. It is almost like we have to put
these two different types information thru two different types of filters. To put
these two different types of information onto to one screen is just too much
for your mind to decipher so usually it goes into apathy mode and then
information is missed(kinda like reading a book that isn't making sense but you
continue to read even though you are not absorbing the info). The overlay feature
is a good way to verify and confirm single bits of data. For example, you
see something on the radar and you wonder if it is the suspected mark(or rock or
whatever) so you choose the overlay feature momentarily to confirm that and
then you go back to split screen which allows your brain to seperate the data.
This is just my opinion and observation. Some of you may do it differently.
Trawler on,
John
PS....due to my aviation experience, marine radars have no tilt feature(like
aviation ones) and it drives me absolutely batty when I go looking for the
tilt knob to reduce ground clutter and it isn't there.
