When I purchased my new vessel the PO was insistant about the fact that the only oil he ever used in the mains (Detroit 4x53's) was Texaco URSA 40wt and in the Gen-sets (Onans) Rotella 15/40, as per mfg. recommendations. OK, seems simple enough except that despite my unrelenting search over the past month I have been unable to locate any source for the URSA in either the area of the boat or even down here in Indiana where I happen to be this week-end. I did peruse the maintenance manuals on the engines and in fact did find statements related to the use of different oils with warnings to not mix oils of different mfg..
Rotella is not a problem as I have found several sources for it including SAMs club. What I have used in the past and I have been able to locate locally, although at a price I find a little high at $8.00 a gal., is Chevron DELO in 40 wt..
My question is: Based upon the mfg's recommendation regarding the mix of different oils is it necessary that I drain the URSA from the mains (this oil was just changed two months ago and has about 5 hours use on it) and refill with DELO or do you think I can get away with the addition of DELO when topping off prior to the next oil change?
